It’s finally finished! After weeks of cutting, stamping, antiquing and gluing, I’ve finally finished what is now a VERY belated birthday present for my friend Crystal. Like most of my projects, when I started on this I didn’t expect it to take more than a few days. Several weeks later… here we are.
I definitely learned a lot while doing this project, and it’s been really exciting getting all the details perfected. There was a lot of thought that went into every aspect.
Crystal is studying to be a funeral director, so a coffin was the obvious choice for the shape of the box. I used red and black and silver for the color palate, which seem to be some of her favorite colors. I embossed a spiderweb and candelabra design to the inside of the box, and distressed the edges to give it a ‘darker’ look. The symbol on the front is an ankh, which is the Egyptian symbol for eternal life. I liked it because it fit really well with the shape of the coffin, complimented the bird skull and is a little ironic. I knew Crystal would like it because she has a tattoo of one. Finally, the bird skull was a cast of a real skull that her and my best friend Liana gave me. Crystal has a collection of animal skulls, so it seemed appropriate. I am very pleased with the final result, and am a little sad I’ll have to let it go. Unfortunately, due to how labor intensive ‘handmade’ gifts are, it will probably be the last one for quite some time. 😦
